The Top 5 Oils to Care for Dry Skin

It's normal for many people to experience dry skin from time to time.

Common causes of dry skin include changes in weather, eg. cold harsh winter weather and turning the heating on or using drying skin care products. Spells of dry skin can be annoying but manageable and your skin will usually return to normal within a week or so.

For some people, dry skin may be all too familiar. It's not uncommon to suffer from dry skin year round. You may feel like no matter what you try or how many products you slather on to your face, you just can't seem to fix it! The problem is, some products on the market can contain chemicals which could irritate or dry your skin out even more! Yes, even if they're marketed for use on dry skin! Unfortunately, when it comes to skin care unless you try the product you'll never really know how your skin will react to it. There is an easier way to go about it though! Natural products are less likely to cause irritation and more likely to nourish your skin and tackle dry spells.

A common misconception about skin care is, the thicker the product, the more hydrating it is. This is almost always untrue. Yes, a thick moisturiser will give your skin much needed hydration, but will it keep it hydrated? Not for as long as an oil will! Oil is the best way to go keep your skin from getting dry. Continued use could banish dry skin and help improve all of your symptoms such as flaking and skin feeling tight! Many people enjoy using an oil but aren't sure what's best for their skin or when to use them. We're going to take you through our top five oils for dry skin, both face and body!

Coconut Oil

Let's get the most obvious out of the way! We love coconut oil for many things but it's a star when it comes to dry skin. A lot of people claim that coconut oil doesn't suit their face as a moisturiser, which is fine! Everyone's skin is different. It does, however, work faultlessly on almost everyone's body for dry and damaged skin.

The skin on our bodies can become dry for a long list of reasons. One of the main culprits is shaving! Shaving our legs regularly can cause dryness, flaking and cracking. Once the skin on our legs becomes dry it can be extremely uncomfortable. Tight fitting clothes such as leggings and jeans can cause itching and more flaking.

Coconut oil helps to nourish deep into the skin and strengthen skin cells. It has anti-ageing properties which enable it to leave skin looking more plump and youthful. Coconut oil is able to penetrate deeper into the skin than most synthetic products. This means it can do a better job at hydrating your skin and keeping it like that for longer. The vitamin E in coconut oil can help soothe eczema, psoriasis and help with sun burn too. It's suitable for sensitive skin and can even kill off candida, the most common cause of fungal infections on the skin!

It really is an all round miracle product, you can read more about why we love coconut oil so much here

Avacado Oil

Not many people would think to use avocado oil as a moisturiser but if you don't, you're really missing out! Cold pressed avocado oil is a popular skin care saviour for a lot of reasons! It works great on the face as a moisturiser, you can use it as a hair mask and you can use it on your body!

Avocado oil is one of the richest in monosaturated fatty acids, such as oleic acid. As many of us know, these healthy fats are great to add in to our diets but also to our skin care routines! Fatty acids such as oleic acid can have an immediate effect on the skin's tone and texture, leaving you with much smoother and softer skin. The use of avocado oil with dry skin is highly beneficial as it works so quickly to hydrate. Avo oil has also been proven to banish acne and blackheads and prevent more breakouts. If you have problematic skin and dry skin, this may be the moisturiser you've been looking for!

Avocado oil works best when used on clean, still a tad damp skin! Using oils on damp skin allows you to spread it more evenly and lock in even more moisture. As avocado oil is on the thicker side you may want to stick to using it in the evenings and not before makeup. However, if your skin needs a boost both morning and night, use it twice daily!

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oils can work wonders for dry and tired skin. They're one of the best things you can use for evening out tone and texture. This oil is well known for its success in removing acne scarring from the skin and evening the tone of under eye bags.

Vitamin E oil fights off free radicals and blocks them from our bodies due to its antioxidant properties. This is a huge step in preventing signs of ageing including sagging skin and fine lines. It allows the skin to stay looking youthful for longer. The oil is highly nourishing and great for dry skin as it clears up flaking and textured spots on the face in no time! You're able to use this oil morning and evening, it works well at night and also under makeup.

You can often find vitamin E oils infused with other great ingredients such as chamomile and jojoba oil. Read more about the benefits of other ingredients here

Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil is one of the most common oils used in skin care. It boasts a wide range of benefits so we can see why so many people would want to use it!

Much like vitamin E oil, rosehip can really help to even out the skins tone and texture. It's perfect for ageing skin and really, any skin type, as it is so gentle. The essential fatty acids it contains help to renew the skin cells and strengthen them. This means your skin will appear more even and look brighter after using it for a while. Of course, the benefits don't come over night! But with a good week or so of use, you should see a good difference in the way your skin looks and feels.

Rosehip oil is also great on the body for stretch marks and burns marks or any scar you may want to lighten. You can read more about the benefits of rosehip oil and its healing properties here

Argan Oil

Agran oil is a super hydrating, soothing oil most commonly used on the face. Although, you can use it anywhere on the body... including in your hair!

Argan oil contains high amounts of fatty acids and vitamin E which makes it a perfect moisturiser. These essential ingredients work to soften skin leaving you with a much smoother texture. Argan oil is often referred to as liquid gold for the body as it has so many great benefits for the skin.

Because it contains vitamin E and other great things, it's fantastic to use on skin conditions such as eczema. It is extremely soothing for the skin and can help with any itchiness or irritability caused by some dry skin conditions like psoriasis. Regular use can help to clear any patches of dry skin up completely. It is a non-greasy oil so perfect for morning and evening as it just soaks right into the skin. It makes a great on the go moisturiser and you can keep a small tub of it in your bag for any emergency!

If you have dry skin and your hope is running out then fear not! As you can see, there are more options out there than you would think. Try these oils out and see how they work for you. Remember, you wont see benefits as soon as you use them. We recommend using oils once to twice a day for around two weeks, then you should see the full benefits coming through! A solid skin care routine with other hydrating products is a must! Make sure you're looking at all your ingredients in case you're using something that is drying your skin out. Our top tip is to look for soap free products. Soap is a big culprit when it comes to dry skin so make sure your products are free of it!
